how can I "create a semantic model from the dataflow to use in Power BI Service

Hi,

I created a data flow in Power BI Service. How can I "create a semantic model from the dataflow to allow a user to utilize the data to create reports in Power BI Service?

I found this document, but it doesn't mention the steps.

Thank you

In Power BI service, Currently you can create a semantic model from a dataflow IF you are using Premium per User Datamart, or, if you use Fabric to create dataflow gen2 with destination set for data warehouse or lakehouse.   It is on roadmap to be able to create semantic model in Power BI service, but I don't know what that means yet.

Hey @brightbright ,

you can't!
This is the reason why I use Parallels Pro with my MBP.

Hey ,currently you can not share dataflows with otherse users outside of the workspace that hosts the dataflow.

For this reason I recommend

  1. create a semantic model that consumes the data flow as a data source
  2. provide build permission to every user who needs access to this semantic model (https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/power-bi/connect-data/service-datasets-build-permissions)
  3. consumers can integrate these models in their already existing models, by leveraging the composite model feature (https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/power-bi/transform-model/desktop-composite-models#building-a-compo...
  4. finally you can restrict access to the model derived from the dataflow by using Object Level Security and Row Level Security.

Hopefully, this provides you with an idea of how to tackle your challenge.

    Regards,

    Tom

Thanks @TomMartens

I should've slowed down a bit. I don't want to share the dataflow with users outside of my workspace. I'd like to use the dataflow (consume) in my workspace but I can't figure out how to "create a semantic model that consumes the data flow as a data source." When I try to create a semantic model I only have the below options. I'm using a Mac so downloading the Power BI Desktop is out of the question without creating a virtual environment.

Hi @brightbright

You can Get the Dataflow from Power BI desktop

User will need access permission to the dataflow

You have no other option but to use Desktop.

@aj1973 can I do the same in Power BI Service? That's what I have access to.
