I connect a local Excel workbook to the Power BI service. I create a pivot table and a slicer and I want to make it available for consumption in the browser. But the Excel slicer will not work in Excel Online or even within Power BI because unable to refresh data connections.
Is this something that might work anytime soon?
In Power BI, when importing Excel workbook, it will load all data, other objects to filtering data will not be loaded. In this scenario, I suggest import your workbook into Power BI Desktop, create a slicer in Power BI Desktop. Then publish this .pbix onto Power BI Service.

Simon, I am facing a similar problem as @rnoone that it seems impossible to refresh a PBI data conecction in Excel Online. Your answer doesn't address the question if there are ways already or if it is planned to be available any time soon/ever to refresh a Power BI connection (preferably with taking into account PBI RLS!) in Excel Online?
Edit: Came across this as a feature request and it seems it is planned: https://ideas.powerbi.com/forums/265200-power-bi-ideas/suggestions/13690905-allow-excel-online-to-co...
