connecting Power BI Service to an Excel file in Sharepoint

Hello,

I setup a Power BI Report in Desktop to read an Excel file in Sharepoint.  Desktop works fine.

When I upload to service I am prompted to create a connection.  Is OAUTH 2.0 the best connection type to use?

Thank You,

Michael

Hi,@mikebi

1.To test your requirement, I also create an excel file in my SharePoint and read it into desktop and publish it to the service, the screenshot of the process is below:

vlinyulumsft_5-1713841713589.png

2.I then live-tested several of the credential validation methods offered by the service, with the following results:

In the use of OAUTH 2.0 credential verification method, you need to click "Edit Credentials", the following result chart will appear, after successful verification, then we can create a smooth connection:

3.As seen in the above figure, only OAUTH 2.0 can be created successfully. And I have also configured the gateway connection for immediate refresh, and the screenshot of their process is below:

4.So here's my conclusion:

OAUTH 2.0 is the more efficient way to authenticate credentials in creating connections about SharePoint files. And first of all, it provides a high level of security, ensuring that only authorized people can access the data, secondly, users can connect using their existing authentication, and lastly, it is also auto renewable, so that users don't need to authenticate as often. However, the choice needs to be made taking into account the actual requirements and the technical capabilities of the organization.
