composite model refresh

Hi all,

I am using a composite model in PowerBI service (made of an Azure SQL database and an imported excel file), so that I can change (with the use of PowerApps embedded in the report) some values and see they impact on a visual.

I first successfully tried the direct impact of my PowerApp on a visual linked to the Direct Query only: any change on a value in PowerApps immediately updated my SQL database, and then the great PowerBIIntegration.Refresh() also refresh my SQL databased-linked visual in Power BI. Great!

But things got more tricky when I tried to use a visual linked a combined table. This combined table is the result in Query Editor of a merge between my excel imported file and some data from the SQL database DQ. As it seems that PowerBIIntegration.Refresh() doesn't actually refresh the whole PBI dataset, my combined table-linked visual would not refresh. 😢

I've now tried (thx to link here) to create in PowerApps a whole dataset refresh button, but the refresh attempt fails, with the following message about the combined table :

Note that the refresh works well in Desktop.

I'd therefore have 2 questions for you:

- It getting quite complicated here for me... Isn't there an easier way to refresh the whole dataset for such a combined model?

- what kind of "Information" might be needing in order to combine data?

Thx in advance!

Ben

Hi @BenCardineau,

This message might be related to the data privacy settings of the data sources.
Can you check those in Power BI Desktop and make sure they have the same setting?

Thx @nickyvv , good idea!

... but unfortunately both DQ and Import sources are set to None (I tried both Public, same result), so I guess there must be sth else... 😭

Ben

Hi @BenCardineau ,

If your dataset contains not only the cloud data source but also the on premise data source, then it needs to use the gateway,  and you may configure schedule refresh. See more : On-premises data gateway , Add a data sourceConfigure scheduled refresh .

Note that you also need to select "Allow user's cloud data sources to refresh through this gateway cluster" option under Gateway Cluster Settings. See: Merge or append on-premises and cloud data sources.

Best Regards,

Amy
