I'd like to create a Power BI report from an on-prem SSAS tabular cube. I plan to use 'Live connect' (not 'Import'). Other than setting up a gateway to allow for the connection from the Power BI service to the SSAS tabular cube, do I need to put the report (dataset?) on a refresh schedule? If so, since I'm on Power BI shared capacity, am I limited to 8 refreshes a day? If it matters, I deploy the report to the service (workspace) via the Publish button in Power BI Desktop.

The 8 refreshes a day applies to importing data in import mode.
Your reports will use direct query which sends queries as needed so retrieves much lower volumes of data. Eg it's not subject to the limit and you don't need to configure the refresh.
