Would there be any downtime when we upgrade P3 capacity to P4

Hi,

We have a P3 premium capacity, we need to upgrade to it P4. Our Global admins have already procured SKUs,the v-cores etc..  Our question is, will there be any downtime or impact to the exsiting workspaces associated with this P3 during upscale operation. Additionally, approximately how time does it take overall?

Thanks,

Tanya.

Hi, @tanyapammy

Based on your description, when upgrading from Power BI Premium P3 to P4, it is essential to consider the potential impact on existing workspaces and any associated downtime.

1. Downtime and Impact, during the upscale operation, there may be a brief period of reduced responsiveness for report viewing and interaction. This is because the upgrade process involves adjusting capacity settings, allocating resources, and transitioning workloads. Existing workspaces associated with the P3 capacity may experience a temporary slowdown while the upgrade takes place. However, this downtime should be minimal if everything goes smoothly.

2. Planning and Communication, inform your users about the planned upgrade. Let them know that there might be a short window of reduced performance during the transition. Coordinate with your team to ensure a smooth process. Consider scheduling the upgrade during off-peak hours to minimize the impact on users.

3. Overall Duration, the overall time for the upgrade depends on various factors, including the size of your dataset, the complexity of your reports, and the efficiency of the upgrade process. Typically, the upgrade process itself doesn’t take long—usually within a few hours. However, additional time may be needed for testing and validation.Best Practices, backup your workspaces: Before the upgrade, create backups of your critical workspaces to avoid data loss. Monitor the upgrade: Keep an eye on the process and verify that workspaces are functioning as expected after the transition. Test thoroughly: Validate reports, dashboards, and data connections post-upgrade to ensure everything is working correctly.

Remember that proper planning and communication are crucial to minimize any disruptions during the upgrade. If executed carefully, the impact on existing workspaces should be minimal, and the overall duration should be manageable.

Thank you for the informaiton. Is there any way we can estimate downtime?

Hi, @tanyapammy

The official documentation does not directly provide a detailed method for evaluating downtime. The overall time to upgrade depends on various factors such as the size of the dataset, the complexity of the reports, and the performance of the underlying infrastructure. However, this can vary greatly depending on the specifics of your environment. You can submit an idea for here and the product team will take note of such a need.

Thankyou @v-yaningy-msft for the information.

I can confirm that we saw approximately 1 and half minute of downtime. We also observed slowlness with few reports on the capacity for next 1 hour.

Thankyou
