A colleague has shared a power bi report with me and he has given me the build right. When I open the dataset on my powr bi desktop, the measures are grey out. I can use them to create my own reports, but I can't see the calculation formula behind the measures. Is this normal?

Hi @Anonymous ,
You must have misunderstood something. Build permission is used to create report based on the dataset in power bi service. If you want to see formula for measure in data model of dataset , you need to download the pbix file or just let the colleague share the pbix file with you. If you just connect to the dataset from power bi dataset(lc or dq),you will not have permission to see formula of measures, you only can create new measures in direct model.

Thanks, Denis. My colleague has given me edit and build rights. I will check with him on Monday anyway.

Thansk, Dedmon. You solved my quesiton. It turns out I don't have the right to download the pbix file, I think this relates to editing rights. To get editing rights, I need to be member or owner of the workspace/app where this report is located, which is not an option here because the owner the report is sharing the report from his personal workspace.
Hi @Anonymous ,
I think you should cosult with the report creator that if you can get the pbix file directlt from him.

Hey @Anonymous ,
sure, I would be happy if you could let me know if that was the reason.
Always good to learn something new about Power BI 😉
Hey @Anonymous ,
build permission just gives you the possibility to create new reports based on that dataset.
If you want to change something you also need edit permission.
About the greyed out issue, I'm not 100% sure, check with your colleague if edit permissions solves that. If that's the case then with only build permission you not even see the measure.
Check out the November 2025 Power BI update to learn about new features.
