Why Power BI Deployment Pipelines Don't Replace Existing Reports in Apps

When deploying a Power BI report from Test to Production using Deployment Pipelines, the report appears in the Production workspace as a new report instead of replacing the existing one. As a result, when updating the Power BI App, users see an error:

"Something went wrong. Some content got removed in the Workspace. Click OK to apply the changes in the App."

Hi @Mvsainathareddy

This issue arises when deploying Power BI reports using Deployment Pipelines from a Test workspace to a Production workspace. Instead of updating the existing report in Production, the deployment creates a new report with a different internal identifier (object ID), even if the report name appears the same. Because the Power BI App in the Production workspace is still linked to the old version of the report—which no longer exists after deployment—it triggers an error for users: “Something went wrong. Some content got removed in the Workspace.” This message appears when trying to update or access the app, as it cannot locate the original report it was referencing. The solution involves either manually re-linking the new report to the app or ensuring that the report ID is preserved during deployment (which isn't currently handled automatically by pipelines unless explicitly overwritten). To avoid this in the future, always verify if the deployment is set to replace existing content, not just add it.

Hi Mvsainathareddy,

We sincerely appreciate your inquiry on the Microsoft Fabric Community Forum.

Based on my understanding, the issue arises because the Power BI App references reports by their unique object IDs (GUIDs). If a report in the Production workspace has not been deployed through the pipeline—for instance, if it was manually uploaded or previously replaced—its GUID will differ. Consequently, when deploying a new version via the pipeline, Power BI treats it as a new report, causing the App to consider the original report as “missing,” which results in the “Something went wrong” error.

Kindly adhere to the following steps, which may assist in resolving the issue and restoring the App's functionality:

  1. Delete or rename the existing (manually published) report in the Production workspace.
  2. Use the Deploy button within the Deployment Pipeline to push the report from Test to Production.
  3. Open the App, click on Update App, verify that the newly deployed report is selected, and republish.

This procedure will re-establish the correct lineage and prevent the application error.
