Hi All,
We have a data source as Azure SQL (in Azure) and we are creating Power BI reports out of this Database. We are creating the Power BI reports on a laptop that is in the customer’s network. We have deployed the VNET data gateway through the Power Platform admin portal and connected it to Azure VNET. We have also created a connection inside the VNET data gateway and the user has access to the dataset and VNET data gateway connection.
We want all the traffic from Power BI to the Data Source ( Azure SQL) should use the VNET data gateway and we should be able to verify it.
But as of now, we are not getting that “Gateway Connection” option enabled on the Power BI dataset.
The customer doesn't have a gateway on his machine and is reluctant to download that as he says this is not the requirement for the VNET.
Please advise some troubleshooting steps or documentation for the same.
Thanks,
Ankit
Solved! Go to Solution.
The VNET data gw doesn't require any additional gateway in the user's system or VM. That's the beauty of the VNET data gw.
The issue was that the user was not having perms on that dataset, we assigned the perms for the gw under Manage Gateway there is an option for "Administrators" and add the user as Admin.
Also, while adding a data source to the gw there is the option "Users" to add that user in there as well.
That 2 perms were missing in my case.
Thanks,
Ankit

Hi @AnkitKukreja ,
Just to clarify, if data is sitting inside an organization's firewall, there has to be a gateway. The gateway should be installed on a server or other machine that does not go down. That said, you can install a personal gateway but that means that the machine the personal gateway is installed on should not be turned off ever if it will conflict with the refresh times.
If the data is cloud based, then a gateway is not needed.
If you are using a laptop in the customer's network and the data is cloud based, they do not need to use a gateway. The error is probably happening because the connection strings are different in desktop than the service if you are trying to do something with a gateway in between.
The desktop file should be fine getting to the cloud data. Then, just publish that and do not connect it to the gateway you set up and assuming all other things being set correctly, it should work.
