User-Specific Error in SSAS Report: Inconsistent Data Loading Issue

Hi everyone! I have a report published in an online workspace that is shared with many people. I'm currently facing a strange issue where a user can view different parts of the data from an SSAS model, but one specific dataset from the model is giving them an error. When they try to load it, the message says: "Cannot load data for this visual. Try again later or contact support." The strange thing is that the user claims this problem only occurs on their personal computer, whereas everything works fine when they try it on another working computer.

The error message doesn't say much besides something similar to this (made-up values below):

Activity ID: 3xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
Request ID: f3xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
Correlation ID: d3xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

Here are some potential causes and troubleshooting steps:

1. Local Cache Issue

  • Issue: The user's Power BI Desktop or browser might have cached old or corrupted data, leading to errors when trying to load the specific dataset.
  • Solution: Clear the cache in Power BI and the browser.
    • For Power BI Desktop: Go to File > Options and settings > Options > Data Load, and then click on "Clear cache".
    • For Browser: Clear the browser cache or try accessing the report in an incognito/private browsing mode.

2. Network or Proxy Settings

  • Issue: The user’s personal computer might have different network or proxy settings, which could interfere with the connection to the SSAS model.
  • Solution: Check if the user’s computer is connected to the same network as their work computer. If a proxy server is being used, ensure that it is configured correctly. They can try disabling the proxy temporarily to see if it resolves the issue.

3. Firewall or Antivirus Software

  • Issue: Security software on the user’s personal computer might be blocking or interfering with the connection to the dataset.
  • Solution: Temporarily disable the firewall or antivirus software to see if the dataset loads correctly. If it does, add exceptions for Power BI and related network traffic.

4. Outdated Power BI or Browser

  • Issue: The Power BI Desktop or browser version might be outdated or incompatible.
  • Solution: Ensure that the user is using the latest version of Power BI Desktop and their browser. Update both if necessary.

5. User Permissions

  • Issue: There might be a permissions issue specifically on the user’s personal computer that’s causing the problem.
  • Solution: Verify that the user has the correct permissions for the SSAS model and the specific dataset. Sometimes, re-assigning permissions or refreshing the user’s access can resolve issues.

6. SSAS Connection Issue

  • Issue: There might be an intermittent issue with the SSAS connection specifically from the user's personal computer.
  • Solution: Check the connection string and settings in Power BI to ensure they are correct. Also, test the connection to SSAS directly from the user's personal computer using SQL Server Management Studio (SSMS) to see if the issue persists.

7. Corrupted Installation

  • Issue: There could be a problem with the Power BI Desktop installation on the user's personal computer.
  • Solution: Uninstall and reinstall Power BI Desktop to ensure all components are working correctly.

8. Error Details in Logs

  • Issue: The error message isn’t providing enough details, but logs might have more information.
  • Solution: Check the detailed logs in Power BI by navigating to File > Options and settings > Options > Diagnostics, and enabling tracing. Then, reproduce the issue and check the logs for more detailed error information.

9. Browser Extensions or Add-ons

  • Issue: Browser extensions or add-ons might be interfering with Power BI service.
  • Solution: Disable browser extensions one by one to identify if any of them are causing the issue.

10. DNS or Hosts File Issues

  • Issue: The DNS configuration or hosts file on the user's personal computer might be affecting how Power BI resolves the SSAS server address.
  • Solution: Flush the DNS cache (ipconfig /flushdns in Command Prompt) or check the hosts file to ensure no incorrect entries are causing the issue.

If none of these solutions resolve the issue, you may need to escalate the problem to your IT department or Microsoft support, providing them with the detailed logs and the activity, request, and correlation IDs from the error message for further analysis.
