Turn off Explore this Data feature

Is there a way to turn off / disable the new feature, 'Explore this Data' when a user is viewing Power Web service and specifically viewing an app.

1 ACCEPTED SOLUTION

The docs specify that you can only use it with build permission. You might want to take a look and check if you are sharing to users in the correct way. A regular viewer user, shouldn't have that permission.

Check the PowerBi App setting when sharing. At the last step under advanced settings there is something about this.

I hope that helps,

I think this issue is still not resolved! We tunred off this feature at the tenant settings. So in the properties of the semantic layer it is greyed out (because it is handled at tenant level). Still my users can use Exploration and so see all the content in the Cube.

Also i don't understand why there are not more users complaining. This is a major Security issue I think. In our case we made a portal with only reports that can be viewed by our users. This way they will never see the Fact and dimensions in the Cube.

Now with this feature all this data is exposed!

Are there not more users with this issue? Or am I missing out on something.

Any help is appreciated

correcting my reply:

looks like it is working for users that have access through the published App only.

tested with my test user that doesn't have access to the workspace and only can access the reports through published App and the Explore button is not visible.
when i'm using the user with admin permissions to workspace, i can see the Explore button

the same report,

the user that has access through App only

hello,

I was looking how to disable it and found this post.

Looks like now it is possible to disable this functionality in Tenant settings and it is enabled by default.

Decided to share it in case somebody is looking for it as well.
Thanks,

Andriy

hi team,

Can the power bi product team comment on this one as we dont have the clear picture whether there is any condition which does that.

My question is we dont find any option to disable the " Explore this data(preview) on visuals. i need my users to now use this functionality due to data security or replication.

Hi. I'm sorry but no. You can't turn that off. However, it's a preview feature, that means it's still been developed, things can changed in a near future. I suggest checking the docs to keep up to date: https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/power-bi/consumer/explore-data-service

I hope that helps,

We have just been alerted to this. So our engineer had a look at the Admin Portal and found the following.

In the service, click the settings cog.

Under Governance and Insights (at the bottom) click Admin Portal.

In Tenant Settings, there is a grey banner stating "there are new or updated tenant settings. Expand to review changes". Click the dropdown arrows.

There is an option 2nd from bottom, an option "users with view permission can launch explore". Click this.

Then at the top there's a disable button.

We will get the user who alerted us to this issue to test, but it seems a logical process.

thanks, my concern is that users are able to access data via Apps from the semantic model/dataset, which we might not want them to see so it would be really useful if we could disable this feature.

Agree no more! this is a big concern from data security prespective!!! pls allow to disable regular user to use this function if they do not have the build permission...

I have run into an issue where the individuals are able to use this feature but they do not have build permissions. Since they do not have build permissions they are not able to save what they build. Thankfully they arent able to save it. However, they are still able to see all tables and measures available in the model. Have a big concern with this feature.

Same question here. Had this been solved?

Agree - was this ever resolved?

I believe it is. Online in de properties of the semantic layer you can turn off data exploration. By default it is turned on.
