The Card (new) visual does not work when published to powerbi service with categories.

I have observed that the new card visual behaves completely differently on desktop versus when published to the power bi service.

On desktop, I can create a visual using 3 fields in the "Data" section and some custom formating.

When used as a tool tip on a stacked bar graph I get the following (expected) result both in desktop and online.

However, if I use the "categories" function for the card I get completely different behavior online.

Here is the card itself on desktop:

Here is how it appears as a tooltip in desktop:

But here is how the tooltip appears when published to the powerbi service:

No custom formating, and the filters only show one category...and not even the category that is being moused over.

Just as a control, and to check my own sanity, I created a simliar tool tip page using a table instead and a different bar chart.

Here is the page:

Here is the desktop tool tip behaving as expected:

And here it is published:

Other than some slight resolution difference, everything works as expected.

The problem seems to be when using the card (new) visual with categories. I even tried reseting all of my formating, conditional or otherwise, but the card visual only shows one category when published despite working correctly on desktop.

As a final test I published the report with the tooltip page visible (aka, not hidden like you would expect). I then used the Edit option online and saw this:

The categories section is completely missing! No wonder it doesn't work!

For my sanity and the sanity of tens of thousands of Powerbi developers, please fix this!

Hi @ASut1

You're experiencing a known inconsistency between the behavior of the new card visual in Power BI Desktop and its behavior once published to the Power BI Service, specifically when using the "Categories" field. In Desktop, everything works as expected—the card visual renders multiple fields with correct custom formatting, and when used as a tooltip, it accurately responds to the category being hovered over. However, once the report is published, that functionality breaks: the formatting is lost, the visual only shows one category (and often not the correct one), and critically, the Categories field appears to be missing entirely, rendering the visual unable to dynamically respond to tooltip context. This mismatch clearly indicates a bug or feature gap between the Desktop rendering engine and the Power BI Service backend, particularly in how the Service interprets or supports the new card visual’s "Categories" configuration.

Your workaround of using a table visual instead confirms that the tooltip logic and data context are functioning correctly in general, but that the new card visual specifically is not respecting them when published. This issue is frustrating for developers relying on consistent behavior between environments. Given your detailed environment specs and reproducible steps, this is a solid candidate for escalation through the Power BI Community or by submitting a support ticket to Microsoft. Until it’s fixed, avoiding the new card visual for tooltips or categories in production reports is advisable.
