long time lurker first time poster.
i am able to direct query a published semantic model into a local pbix report.
after a publish the local bpix into the same workspace as the other one i directqueried into, it says there is a connection missing.
any ideas why my newly published semantic model cannot connect to a previously publishe model?
Hi @tommylee2024 ,
Please click on the 'transform data' button and then you'll be asked to change to 'direct query' which should allow you to publish without the error 🙂
hi sai, thanks for the reply.
so i am able to directquery into the published semantic models. and access all the data etc.
but when i publish my own, i get this error....
i can test out your theory, or trying to disconnect to that semantic model before publishing...
but how do you break the connection and keep all the values within my own model?
thanks again!
Hi @tommylee2024 ,
Take a copy of your pbix file. You can delete the data source connections and publish that file to service and see if the same error occurs or not.
I have seen this error a few times -Change the authentication type and try to publish it.
If you are importing any tables from local machine path then move that file to SharePoint and connect to it from your report.
Thanks,
Sai Teja
i tried deleting the data source, but then it said it would delete all my tables associated with those values.
won't work because i need to retain a bunch of data.
Hi @tommylee2024 ,
Take a copy the pbix file and rename it as test and doing your testing on it
Thanks,
Sai Teja
still not working, thanks for all the help and ideas up til now man, much appreacited!!
Thanks for the reply from @SaiTejaTalasila , please allow me to provide another insight:
Hi, @tommylee2024
Regarding the issue you raised, my solution is as follows:
1.Based on your description of the problem, we speculate that you have created a composite model, and if it is a composite model, it has many limitations, and here are our actual results:
2.Here is a screenshot of the official documentation:
3.The following links to the official documentation may be helpful to you:

hello leroy, yep i agree with you that it seems i've created a composite model pbix.
(i am trying to pull in pre-calculated measures from already published semantic models)
and re-using them for my local pbix, then the goal is to re-publish my local one to a work space.
how can i do this succesfully without encountering the "your file is published but disconnected" error?
Thanks
i will look into this as a composite model issue
Hi @tommylee2024 ,
If you were able to refresh the report on power bi desktop then I don't think it will cause the issue when you are publishing. You can try this steps remove that connection and reconnect again on your report and try to publish. If it's not working incase if your reports or on premium then you can use XMLA endpoint(analysis services) and you can connect to existing semantic model.
I hope it will be helpful.
Thanks,
Sai Teja
