Scheduled refresh is disabled because at least one data source is missing credentials.

I have a semantic model with the above message when we attempt to refresh from https://app.powerbi.com/

Data source errorScheduled refresh is disabled because at least one data source is missing credentials. To start the refresh again, go to this dataset's settings page and enter credentials for all data sources. Then reactivate scheduled refresh.

Cluster URIWABI-US-CENTRAL-A-PRIMARY-redirect.analysis.windows.net

We have the following verified:

  1. We are connecting to an SQL server within *.netsmartcloud.com
  2. We have an explicit account we use to login within SSMS
    • Server Type: Database Engine
    • Server Name: *.netsmartcloud.com
    • Authenticiation: SQL Server Authentication
    • Connection Security Encryption Optional
    • Unchecked Trust Server Certificate
  3. We can run the query within SSMS without any issues.
  4. We can refresh the data within Power BI Desktop without the error message
  5. We verified the login and password are correct within Power BI Dekstop x3
  6. Data Source credentials is greyed out within Semantic model settings.

I looked through the community and did see some that were pointing to potentially pointing at configuring a gateway.

I'm looking for a solution to allow manual and scheduled refreshes of this data.

After talking with my CIO we believe the issue is between our source and microsoft.  We will need to speak with them on allowing data from their sql server to app.powerbi.com.  Untill we talk to them, I cannot update what the solution will be.

@bradjohnson Hey,

1) Ensure that you can access the "Data source credentials" section and input the correct credentials. If it's greyed out, this might indicate that the gateway hasn't been properly set up or associated with the data source.Ensure a data gateway is installed and configured correctly on your network.

The gateway allows Power BI service to communicate with your on-premises data sources, such as SQL Server.

2) Go to the Power BI service (https://app.powerbi.com) and navigate to your dataset settings.

3) Assign your dataset to the configured gateway to allow refresh operations. Ensure your SQL data source is configured within the gateway.

4) Check the connection settings within Power BI to ensure they match what you have verified in SSMS (Server Name, Authentication Type, etc.).

Once credentials are set correctly, reactivate scheduled refresh in the dataset settings.

Thanks

Hi @bradjohnson ,

The error you are encountering maybe due to access issue. If a user accessing the data source doesn’t have enough permissions, then you might see the credentials greyed out. Make sure you have the permissions to edit the credentials. Another issue could be that your Gateway is misconfigured.

  • Ensure the machine where the gateway is installed is powered on and it cannot be installed on multiple machines for the same user that is way it may show status offline. Try to restart the gateway if needed.
  • Another reason could be--If the Edit Credentials option is greyed out, Power BI may still be trying to use a gateway that’s not properly configured. In Power BI Service, go to Manage Gateways > Data Sources and try removing the gateway association or reconfiguring the data source without selecting a gateway. On the credentials page, choose None if applicable, and re-enter credentials.

Hope this helps!

I went into the Manage Connections and Gateways > Connections > clicked the refresh, but returned Offline.  Gateway cluster name is "(Personal mode)".  When examining the status, the error message returns:

Connection details
Troubleshoot test connection issues with your connection. Learn more.
Status: Offline

Here is some details about why the connection status is "offline". Contact Microsoft support and include the information below in your ticket.

Error code: DMTS_DatasourceHasNoCredentialError
Connection error: Connection has no credentials
Cluster URI: https://api.powerbi.com

Again, our credentials are valid and working without any issues within the Power BI Desktop application.

@Greg_Deckler I wish it was that simple, but as noted that option is greyed out and not able to expand.

We can refresh the data on Power BI Desktop without any error messages so we know the credentials are not missing nor incorrect.

@bradjohnson You need to check in the Power BI service. Open the Settings for the semantic model and check under Data source credentials:
