SQL connection works on desktop but not service

I am trying to add an SQL connection to our enterprise gateway (the SQL database is from an external vendor, not an internal database).

PBI Service does not recognise the connection and keeps giving the error that "Connection could not be created", however PBI Desktop has no problems connecting to it. What could be the problem? Do I need to get IT to install a data gateway on the vendor's server? Thank you.

Thank you.

Hi. That's weird. Let me say something that might help.

Consider that the gateway must be installed in a VM that has access to the SQL Database. You should be able to connect to the VM and test the SQL connetion. If it's working there, it should work at Service with the gateway.

When you say Power Bi Desktop works, are you talking about the same Machine running Desktop and the gateway? because if it's a different computer then it's totally different.

I hope that helps,
