SQL Server in AWS Refesh Gateway Connection?

I tried searching for answers to this question, but not sure if any of them are outdated.

I’m building a report a client who has a SQL server hosted on an AWS server. How can I setup a gateway connection for refresh in Power BI service? Is my only option an on premises gateway connection?

I highly recommend to install the on-premises data gateway. So I think the answer is "yes".
