Row Level Security not working on excel files inside PowerBI apps

Hello everyone,

I'm doing an app in power bi and i have realized that the RLS i have configured in the dataset is not working when a user opens and excel file through the powerbi app (by app i mean the workspace app not the mobile app).

The excel was creating with a connection to the dataset and publish to a workspace. If i send the file to that user and upload it to his workspace and open it, the RLS does work as expected, but if i build and app on my workspace and set that user in the audience and share it, when that user installs the app and open the excel report the RLS does not work.

does anyone has a solution for this matter? or is it a documented bug or not supported feature?

thanks,

thanks for you're reply. Something is wrong then, i can asure you the the user i gave acces trough the app does not have any permission in the workspace, it is only set in the audience.

I added to my data model the function userprincipalname() to see the actual users, and when the other user open the excel report with a powerbi dataset embedded, the functions shows my user instead of his username, but if i pass the same excel to him and upload it to his private workspace, the RLS does work and the function shows that.

It there a hidden configuration i'm missing or a bug maybe?

It works as designed. RLS  does not take effect if the user has workspace access beyond viewer.

If you are on Premium don't give your users workspace access, only share via the app.  If on shared, don't give users more than Viewer access.
