Refresh Failing While Connecting with a SQL Server Private Link

I have been requested by the stakeholders for a report to connect to the SQL database using a private link, like below:

xxxxxxxxxxxx.privatelink.database.windows.net

After adding this text to my pcs host file and connecting to a vpn, I was able to connect in the power bi desktop. However, I did encounter the below message:

I was instructed by my company's IT team that it was ok to bypass this and just click 'OK'. Doing so allowed me to access the data in Power BI desktop and I thought all was good.

However, when I try to refresh the same report in the service, I get a similar 'error', only I don't see an option to override it in the service like I did in the desktop. Error in the service:

According to your description, when you refresh the data in Power BI Service , you get the error code "The server name provided doesn't match the server name on the SQL Server SSL certificate.".

 I found a similar issue which was fixed by specifying FQDN for SQL Server data source under on-premises data gateway. For more information, please refer to this thread:
