Published DataSet Shared Externally as an API

Good day, 

My company shares data with clients via 2 methods:

1. Directly accessing our production website via APIs

2.  For Clients who have PBI, we share workspace filtered for the client

I want to change this, I want to publish the data set as a PBI-shared dataset and share it externally as PBI API's

I want to control the API connections via PBI

Please help would this work or other ideas?

if yes, would it only work for clients that has PBI to connect to the PBI api's

Look into the cross-tenant dataset sharing capabilities introduced in preview back in October. I haven't tested it but I believe you should be able to use RLS with this. Do read the considerations and limitations section in the docs:

Thank You i have made good progress testing this method, i unfortunately waited for PBI Administrator access to enable tenant share which has taken forever

will close this thread when all tested

How would i PBI Dataset share if i have an tableau client, does tableau have a connection to powerbi component?

This sounds great, really could take the data sharing with external clients to another level

Does it work with, Tenant PBI Pro to External PBI Pro or Premium? 

How do i do RLS with external clients/tenant not having their AD user etc?

I have an test tenant setup with pro so i should be able to test or do i require PBI Admin access?

I know you can use API to realize many functions in power bi.

But I don't know what's your meaning of "control the API connections via PBI". Do you want to write the API language in power bi or do you mean something else?

I am thinking, instead of sharing the production API with clients, having the data published as a shared dataset in PBI and then sharing the link to the datasets with the clients as a PBI API or url etc?

I really hope this is possible as i thought that one could share published datasets ineternally why not externally, to replace the API off production website

could i also make the shared daatsets row-level security for different clients?

But external uses shud not require PBI or a license as they might use different apps, as an APi
