Premium Per User Dataset Refresh Results in ASYNC_NETWORK_IO SQL Waits

I have had a dataset in a Pro workspace. It pulls from an Azure SQL DB nightly.

Last week I signed up for Premium Per User and copied the dataset to a PPU workspace. I've been testing it and have noticed a lot of ASYNC_NETWORK_IO waits on the SQL DB during the dataset refreshes. I've never seen a ASYNC_NETWORK_IO when the dataset was refreshing on the Pro workspace.

I understand ASYNC_NETWORK_IO waits indicate SQL is done fetching the rows the client requested. Either the client app is overwhelmed with the volume of data or there are some network issues preventing the data from reaching the client quickly.

Has anyone else noticed this happening on a Premium workspace? My PPU and Pro workspaces are in the same region, so I don't think the region is the reason for the waits showing up.  I'm not sure what additional troubleshooting I can do. Is there a way to monitor the network between the Azure SQL DB and Power BI or determine if Power BI is being overwhelmed?

Hi @Ecks

I would monitor the azure SQL DB, because that is something you can monitor.

With regards to the dataset does it get refreshed as fast as the dataset in Pro?

Also what is the concern with the ASYNC_NETWORK_IO?
