We have a PowerBI report with a auto refresh setup to fetch data from an Azure SQL DB. My question was whether there is any more secure way to to connect PowerBi Saas and my SQL DB without the use of userid and password? Is there a way to use Service principal/oAuth or something similar?

Not supported yet. These data source credentials are indispensable to access the data source.
Currently, Service principal are only allowed as an authentication method for Azure AD applications to access Power BI Service content and APIs.

The gateway is the only way you'll be able to automatically refresh power bi reports when published to the server.

In the upper-right corner of the Power BI user interface, select the settings gear icon and then select Settings. Switch to Datasets and select the dataset, such as AdventureWorksProducts, you want to examine. Select the Refresh history link to open the Refresh history dialog.
However, In Power BI, gateway is the only way you'll be able to automatically refresh power bi reports when published to the server.
