Power Bi Premium Gen2

Premium P1 vs Gen2

We are using P1 - 8 cores 25 GB RAM-Current Capacity workloads - 55% Dataset, 37% Dataflow & 8% Paginated Reports

AS per the documentation with Premium Gen2  the amount of memory available on each node size is set to the limit of memory footprint of a single artifact, and not to the cumulative consumption of memory. For example, in Premium Gen2 P1 capacity, only a single dataset size is limited to 25 GB, in comparison to the original Premium, where the total memory footprint of the datasets being handled at the same time was limited to 25 GB.

If we enable Power Bi Premium Gen 2 without Autoscale, Is all artifcats (Datasets, Dataflows, Paginated reports) gets 25 GB RAM allocation on P1 capacity and there will not be any addtional cost ?

or Can we use Power Bi Premium Gen 2 without Autoscale ? and what's the distribution of capacity workloads on P1 capacity.

Hi @vijaykj09

Your understanding is correct in that you now with Gen2 will be able to use 25GB per artifact.

I would suggest testing this to be 100% sure that it works as expected.

Thank you Gilbert!

As Premium cluster is reserved instance; Do you know by any chance with Gen2 without auto scale option how Microsoft internally assigning 25GB per artifact? I believe internally v cores are getting added ? if so, we're getting this feature for free of cost and many customers will not choose auto scale option.

Hi @vijaykj09

You will always be limited by the number of v-cores for the capacity.

If you do not enable the autoscaling you will be limited by v-cores.

Still trying to understand in depth about Power Bi Premium Gen2 as we wanted to use it on top of P1 capacity.

if we don't enable autoscaling and choose Power Bi Premium Gen2 on our P1 capacity; our configuration of capacity still remains same (i e 8 core, 25 GB RAM with additional feature of each artefacts  Datasets, Dataflows, Paginated reports gets 25 GB RAM instead of cumulative consumption of memory.

Let's assume If we're running both dataflow and datasets and both requires 20 GB of memory to process and refresh. How Microsoft is assigning 25 GB to each artefact without auto scale option ? I assume in the backend they are just allocating 25 GB to each artefact.

Then Considering 4 artefact ( AI, Datasets, Dataflows, Paginated reports- 25 GB per artefact) 100 GB of memory is reserved on Power Bi Premium Gen2 on our P1 capacity ? Is my understanding correct ? or they will allocate 25 GB to each artefact based some parameters and need basis (like execution , query time ..)
