Power BI service slow on one account, fast on another

Power BI service is really slow on one account, while the same report runs with normal speed on another account.

The only difference between these two accounts is that the slow account is signed in on the On premises data gatway. The slow account is the administrator of the gateway and the fast account is granted permission to use the gateway.

Could this be the issue and how can we solve this?

Hi @jayvandenbos,

When you refresh your data, the report runs differently when you use different accounts, right? If it is, the gateway may be a issue affecting the run speed. There are several factors that contribute to how long a refresh will take. A faster gateway will perform its operations faster.  The elements affecting the speed are many things like:

  • How big is the data source being refreshed?
  • How complex are the operations be performed on the data?
  • What resource bottlenecks is the Gateway facing?
  • Where is the Gateway compared to the data sources?
  • What network bottlenecks exist between the Gateway and its data sources?
  • What network bottlenecks exist between the Gateway and the Power BI Service?

Thanks for your reply, but it is not the refresh itself that is really slow. It is the rendering of the report, so when a filter is applied it takes very long on the slow account to apply the filter to the visuals. On the fast account this is no problem at all.

A while ago the same report was running on the slow account with a personal mode gateway and then there was no problem at all. The only difference now is that we have a gateway installed on the server instead of a personal mode gateway. That is when the applying of filters etc. became really slow on one account but not on the other one.

To answer a few of your questions, the data set is not really complex. It is just a few Excel sheets that are updated on the server. The operations are just a few DAX formulas.

Hi @jayvandenbos,

For your issue, it's hard to check why the runing is slow, which may be caused by many reasons. So I personally suggest you create a support ticket on the right-bottom of this page for dedicated support. And share the gateway blog to them for further analysis.

Angelia
