Hi All,
Looking for some help on this as I am a bit stumped. We have a domainless network infrastructure that is behind a firewall and we have a ring fenced Azure Managed SQL Server Instance that houses our data warehouse. I want to connect our Power BI environment (Cloud based that we get as part of our 365 subscription) to our data warehouse so that we can start playing with the data and set our dashboards to refresh automatically. The question is how do we do this safely so we are not opening up all the ports under the sun. Can anyone recommend an architecture here that would work for us that is best practice plus also that would be pragmatic as well?
Kind Regards
Miles
Hi @MilesNewey ,
As @Tutu_in_YYC said,
You can use the gateway as a bridge for communication between local data sources and the Power BI service environment.
You can refer to the following link to learn about the connection between Power BI and Azure SQL.

Sounds like you just need a power bi gateway installed in your Azure Managed SQL Server Instance. That will be the only communication port between power bi service and your Sql Server instance.
Check out the November 2025 Power BI update to learn about new features.
