Power BI Reports failing to refresh for days now due to XML Analysis time out error

Since Thursday all of our Power BI reports have been taking hours to refresh and then ultimately fail. The main error code we see is "The XML for Analysis request timed out before it was completed. Timeout value: 7200 sec." or "{"error":{"code":"DM_GWPipeline_Gateway_TimeoutError","pbi.error":{"code":"DM_GWPipeline_Gateway_TimeoutError","parameters":{},"details":[],"exceptionCulprit":1}}}"

Initially we thought it was due to the CrowdStrike outage but it is still happening today with the Fabric portal saying everything is up and running.

Our gateway is updated to the current version as well. Are there any suggestions or ideas of what could be causing this? It is really throwing a wrench in our client's day to day processes.

Thank you!

We were able to resolve the issue by resetting the Authentication in each data source connector and created a new service account to use for basic authentication logins. Everything is working smoothly now!

I have some problem in UK. It started yesterday. We can't refresh reports that are linked to SP lists. We have tried trobuleshooting. Issue isn't with DAX or optimalisation. We know that issue is with SharePoint but we don't know what is happening or how to fix that. Online refreresh nor PBIX refrsh isn't working. Anyone more Microsoft team can bring some light into this? It seems that it is not just within my company. I have 250+ end users and I am stuck.

I am able to refresh in powerbi desktop all my SP lists is the Service that does not allow me to refresh.

How ever on my biggest list, Im not using the Sharepoint conector, Im using this solution:

https://hoosierbi.com/2022/11/12/updated-get-sharepoint-list-data-fast/

Maybe this could help you

Hello @Reina_CP,
Thanks for tip. We have tried this few years ago but it wasn't right solution for us.
We have quite large data sets on SP but we need scheudled refresehs so we are using V2 connector for SP lists and up to  yesterday it was working well.

Hello! That solution does allow refreshing in the service. My SP list already has 20,000 rows and increases every day; it is refreshed at least 8 times a day directly from the service. The M code in that link deals with that, and it works really well.

About my problem, I was able to fix it! However, I truly don't understand the issue in the first place.

My dataset is connected to 9 simple SharePoint lists (between 20 and 300 rows tops), then 2 more lists (my fact tables) that have 20,000 rows each, and 3 more fact tables with under 1,000 rows. There is 1 more table that comes from an Excel file. Lastly, I combine some PDF files that contain a small table.

Finally, after many tries, I discovered that if I exclude one of the SharePoint lists that contains only 295 rows, 5 text columns, and 1 true/false column, my report refreshes in the Power BI service without a problem. On the other hand, if I include that simple SP list, my report won't refresh in the service due to Resource Governing

"Resource Governing: This operation was canceled because there wasn't enough memory to finish running it. Either reduce the memory footprint of your dataset by doing things such as limiting the amount of imported data, or if using Power BI Premium, increase the memory of the Premium capacity where this dataset is hosted. More details: consumed memory 16,291 MB, memory limit 16,291 MB, database size before command execution 92 MB. See https://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?linkid=2159753 to learn more."

Honestly, I don't get it.

I have the Pro license. I get that it has limitations, but my datasets are rather small, and how can a 295-row list affect the refresh process only on the service but not in Power BI Desktop?

I tried to include that 295-row SP list using V1 connector, V2, and even the M code I previously shared (the one I use with my biggest lists), and any time that SP list is included in the dataset, it won't complete the refresh process.

Hello! any luck fixing this? I have the same issue

Thursday morning my report was refresh at least 4 times, all of the suden wont refresh since then

We are still working on fixing it, have been trying to troubleshoot the gateway and other variables for days now. whenever i find a fix i will let you know though!

Great! Im working on this also. My dataset is rather simple, no gateway needed because my sources are sharepoint lists, and a few excel files in onedrive, nothing fancy that was working fine.

I think it might be a calculated column or table that is taking a lot of memory. I tried publishing only the data directly form powerquery, without any calculation and it get refreshed in two minutos without any problem.

So Im guessing is somewhere with DAX that needs optimization

Hi @quinnjohnson

The cause could be for multiple reasons.

Relationships, DAX, calculated tables, Power Query....

Best starting point is analyzing the performance of the semantic model in power BI desktop.

thank you for the reply. i cant imagine any of those would be the problem as these reports have all been refreshing successfully for 2+ years now with no issues. now every single report will fail to refresh and nothing has changed in regards to the relationships, DAX, tables, power query, etc.

But the size of the semantic models have for sure been augmented since then.

Maybe some optimization is needed.
