Hey,
basically direct query does not require a Pro license.
But you have to keep in mind that you have to create an App
https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/power-bi/service-create-distribute-apps
that is based on the content of your Power BI workspace. Power BI Free licenses only work with an App.
You also have to make sure that the workspace is assigned to the Premium capacity.
All the users that are accessing content in the workspace need a Pro license.
