Is it possible to use composite modeling when you host your tabular model on-premise and query it using tbe powerbi gateway?

I guess you mean the new composite model, the "DirectQuery for Power BI datasets and Azure Analysis Services".
At the moment as it's in preview, it's only available for Power BI datasets and Azure Analysis Services and not for on Premises Analysis Services:
But they plan that in the future:
SQL Server Analysis Services (SSAS): We plan to support SSAS Tabular models in the next major release of SQL Server. Support for SSAS Multidimensional models is not planned.
