Permissions/Process to stop users from editing reports

      Hi,
When we first started using Power BI few years back in our organization ,we used to take a report , pin it to a dashboard and share the dashboard with users instead of report. We did that for few good reasons so that we can block users from being able to do certain things like rearrange the visuals or drag around ,changing filters,Overall to stop users from editing the reports and protect it from user changes.Till I know 100% that there is not a reason to do it anymore,we  want to keep doing that old way.

But   with many changes in power BI world , Is above process still required now to protect the report from user manipulations, If not how/where can I set permissions to stop editing the report from external users?
Also does users have extra privileges that they have with report that would not have with the dashboard?

Thanks...

Hi @smeg ,

Creating an app is generally the preferred method for distributing read only content to users. Here is some additional information on sharing:

You can give users the Viewer role in the workspace if you do not want them to be able to edit reports:

Hi,

Thanks for the quick response. My users just consume the reports and they do not develop or have a role to play  or add anything to reports.Overall I will not be adding them as users to workspace. But I will be sharing the reports to them by granting access to the report. So is there a way where I can block users from being able to do certain things like rearrange the visuals or drag around ,changing filters or edit the report.

Thanks..

Hi @smeg ,

If you want users to have read-only access to the reports, you can create an app and give users access to the app with the Viewer role in the workspace. Here is additional information:

https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/power-bi/collaborate-share/service-create-distribute-apps

At this point of time,I have few reports for each dept like for sales and finance.I cannot add different dept users into same app. Also I cannot create more than  one app in a workspace.

So using an App is not an option for me. Can you please suggest other  ways or process so that we can block users from being able to do certain things like rearrange the visuals or drag around ,changing filters, editing reports.

Thanks..
