POWER BI Question

Hi Team,

I am new with Power BI and would like to know more details on it vs SQL 2019.

We are going to implement Data Warehouse Management with Power BI being the tool used for the testing.

I would like to know if I purchase Power BI premium license for Windows 2019 server, do I need to also purchase SQL 2019 license as well? 

Please do advise me on this.

Hi @PA2412 ,

They are licenses for different products. Power BI Premium license a capacity-based license. If you are using Power BI and would like to acquire more resources and some capabilities specific with Premium license, then could purchase this license for your organization. For more details about Premium license, you could refer to What is Microsoft Power BI Premium? - Power BI | Microsoft Docs.

But for SQL Server 2019, they have their own licenses.  Power BI Premium license couldn’t replace SQL Server 2019 license.

Hi @PA2412 

If you are meaning Power BI Report server, you could buy it with either of the following:

- SQL Server Enterprise Edition with Software Assuranace

- Power BI Premium P1

As far as I am aware if you buy it with Power BI Premium P1, you do not need to purchase SQL Server.
