PBI service-sharepoint files automatic update

Hi,

Do you know if there is an option to connect an organizational sharepoint site and powerbi service in order to automatically update files?

Details: If i create a pbi file from desktop, upload it to sharepoint site (connected to one drive). After that, to open a new powerbi desktop file, connected it to the current sharepoint pbi file, make some changes, save the report (the sharepoint file will be updated) and publish it to pbi service workspace. Then if i open again from pbi desktop the sharepoint report, make some changes and save it (the sharepoint file will be updated) is it possible somehow the powerbi report in the service to get automatically the changes from the sharepoint saved file, without publishing it?

Thank you.

Hi @EmaVasileva

Power BI Service doesn't auto-update reports from SharePoint/OneDrive changes, but you have options:

  1. Scheduled Data Refresh: Automatically refreshes the dataset, not report visuals/structure.
  2. OneDrive Integration: Save the PBIX file on OneDrive/SharePoint, and Power BI can detect changes (updates need manual refresh in the Service).
  3. Automation: Use Power Automate or Power BI REST API to auto-republish PBIX files after updates.

For full automation, you'd need to set up Power Automate or REST API workflows. Let me know if you need help!

Hi @EmaVasileva  - Yes, Power BI can connect to a SharePoint site and allow for files hosted there to update automatically in Power BI Service. but power bi service cannot automatically detect changes to visuals or layouts in the report. You’ll need to republish the .pbix file for such updates.
