I have an issue with Orphaned Content Packs. I have 3 content packs that I created. These content packs don't exist any more (I have deleted them). I can't be sure if they were created in a Group Workspace or My Workspace. Regardless, they don't exist any more - yet when I go to "get data" I can still see them. This is causing confusion for users. Anyone know if this is a bug, or if there is a way to fix it?
I am experiencing the same issue, and I was able to reproduce it.
1. Create a workspace called Test Workspace
2. Publish content to it
3. Go to Test Workspace and create a content pack
4. Go to My Workspace and install the content pack via Get Data
5. Go to Test Workspace and delete the group
6. Go to My Workspace.
Result
The content pack published in Test Workspace still exists and is effectively orphaned because the group from which is was published is gone. If there is a way to delete it (un-delete the Test Workspace, for example?), please let me know.
Expected Result
I'll let you guys figure out the experience, but it shoudl be along the lines of either preventing the group from being deleted until all content packs have been manually deleted, or warning that there are content packs published that will be deleted when the group workspace is deleted & ask the user to confirm.
Meanwhile, can I have someone manually delete my orphaned content packs? Tell me what to do... Thanks.
This seems to be resolved. The orphaned content pack is no longer available from Get Data so it looks like Microsoft did a sweep. Thanks!
UPDATE: my orphaned content pack is still there... I must have been testing from a different workspace that did not have permissions.
@hymieho Nice! Thanks for the update.
Hi,
I am experiencing the same issue...can't delete a content pack after the group workspace was deleted. Is there a manual approach to removing the content pack. There is no longer a group workspace, so I am thinking that the orpahened content pack will need to be deleted using Power shell or some other utility.
thanks in advance for any assistance provided.
@hymieho I must have missed this one. My experiance is the exact same excep my use case was just sharing dashboards. The issue is the Group Workspace iselft being deleted when it still has content. That content being shared is the headache because people still have access to it and no one can modify or delete it.
If deleting Group, remove/delete all content in the Work space prior to deleting it - because apparently it isn't really deleted on the back end.
Hi @MattAllington,
I test the scenario as yours, content packs don’t appear in content pack library after I delete them. As stated in this article, only in the case that you delete the connection to a content pack you didn't create, it doesn't delete the content pack from the library.
If you are sure that you have deleted the content packs, could you please sign out from Power BI Service, sign in it again and check that if content packs are still available in library?
Thanks,
Lydia Zhang
@MattAllington In my experience content packs have always disappeared from my organisation library when deleted. what would happen when your user would try and get that content pack ? If they are able to get it then surely they aren't deleted. In that case check on group workspace as maybe content pack was created there.
