On premise personal gateway issue with mixed storage dataset

Hello Power BI community !

I have an issue when I publish a new report (and associated semantic model) on the service. My semantic model has a mixed storage mode with the following components :

- Direct query on Analysis Service cube

- Import query on Excel files located on Onedrive

Everything is working fine on desktop side, but when I publish my report on the service, I am not able to configure the getways.

Here is the setup :

- Gateways are created and are online

- Personnal on premise gateway is running

- But when I configure the gateways on my dataset, an error occurs saying that "Impossible to use selected gateway. Make sure the gateway is operational, and try again."

I have seen many topics around this issue but I am not able to find an answer. Is it because it requires to have a standard on premise gateway when we use mixed storage mode ?

Thanks for your help !

Your issue is likely due to Personal Mode Gateway limitations when using Mixed Storage Mode in Power BI.

Key Issues & Fixes:

  1. Personal Gateway Limitation

    • Personal Mode does not support mixed storage (DirectQuery + Import).
    • Solution: Install Standard On-Premises Data Gateway and configure credentials there.
  2. DirectQuery on Analysis Services

    • DirectQuery requires live connection through an Enterprise Gateway (not Personal Mode).
    • Solution: Ensure your Analysis Services source is configured in the Standard Gateway.
  3. Excel on OneDrive Configuration

    • OneDrive files do not require a gateway if properly connected via Cloud Storage Authentication.
    • Solution: Reconnect the OneDrive source as a Cloud File Connection in Power BI Service.
  4. Verify Gateway Mapping

    • Go to Power BI Service → Manage Gateways
    • Ensure both sources (AS Cube + Excel) are mapped correctly under the same Standard Gateway.

Hello @rohit1991  @lbendlin  @v-aatheeque
Thanks A LOT for your high quality answers, it's really amazing to have such a community.
I have asked to my IT services to create the gateway (I don't have the right to do it by myself - security process).
I will keep in touch in case the issue is not solved.
Thanks again !

Hello Power BI Community,

I face a gateway issue when I publish a new report (and new semantic model) on Power BI Service. My semantic model is on mixed storage mode with the following components:
- Direct query with 2 Azure SSAS Cube
- Import query with 2 Excel files located on Onedrive

When I publish a report only connected to my 2 Azure SSAS Cube, everything is working fine. But when add an Excel file connected on import query mode, it’s not working anymore.Important thing, I am using on premise gateway (personal mode).

Here is the setup:
I have set up properly all the gateways

My on premise personal gateway is running

I have configured the gateways on my semantic model

But when I apply the gateways, I have an error message saying that it is impossible to use the selected gateway.

If someone has an idea (maybe I need standard on premise gateway), I would help a lot !

Thanks!

Hi @RLB_____ ,

Thanks for reaching out to the Microsoft Fabric Community forum.
@rohit1991 @lbendlin  Thanks for your prompt response.

As suggested by @rohit1991 @lbendlin ,

  • The personal mode of the on-premises gateway is limited to Power BI only and does not support multiple data sources effectively when mixed storage mode is used. This can lead to connectivity issues, especially when integrating different types of data sources like Azure SSAS...
  • The personal gateway is primarily designed for individual use and may not handle multiple data sources effectively. Switching to a standard on-premises gateway could resolve connectivity issues.
  • For your setup, you will need a gateway connection in Fabric for the DirectQuery with the Azure SSAS Cubes. However, for the Excel files located on OneDrive, you do not need a gateway if they are properly connected via Cloud Storage Authentication.

You do not need a gateway for the Onedrive data if you use the SharePoint Folder connector.

If the Analysis Services Cube is on premise - then I am sorry to hear that. That's one of the worst possible scenarios.  The gateway connection user must be cube admin. I repeat, the connection user MUST BE CUBE ADMIN !!!!!

Please explain what you mean by "mixed" - are you referring to Power Query merges (bad) or data model joins (good) ?
