On-Prem Data Gateway Error/Configuration Question

Hello all!  I have a couple of questions I was hoping that you all may help clear up.  First off I am not very knowledgable with PowerBi as I am on the Infrastructure/DevOps side of things so I may just be missing something in the configuration.

I have configured a pair of the Standard on-prem data gateways using our own provided WCF Relay in our Azure Subscription. The setup was pretty straightforward and everything seems to be configured correctly.  When I run the network tests they all pass from both gateways.

Question:

  1. When I configure my own WCF Relay do I need seperate relays for each node in the data gateway cluster or can I use the same relay? I am currently using the same Relay configuration for both, which seems to be working but we are getting an error when trying to refresh (See below).

Instructions for using our own Relay: Set the Azure Relay for on-premises data gateway | Microsoft Learn

I am able to see the gateway and successfully create Datasources from the portal.  When we reconfigure our reports to use the new On Prem Data gateway cluster and attempt to refresh we get an error:

Power BI may have lost connectivity with the data gateway during this dataset refresh. Please make sure that the data gateway is up and running for the next scheduled refresh.

Please try again later or contact support. If you contact support, please provide these details.

Searching around I found a few posts about this error but none of the fixes really seemed to work.  I did manage to find a Stack Overflow post from about 20 days ago with someone having the same issue with the latest version of the Gateway.

Gateway Version: 3000.154.2 (December 2022)

Any help would be much appreciated

Thank you

Hi @MCrank

Whether you create a cluster, if so, check whether the primary cluster needs to be updated, and we recommend that you reconfigure the gateway, you can refer to the following link:

@Anonymous Thank you for the reply.  I have spent most of the day troubleshooting this issue and finally have the reports running.  But this leaves me with a couple of questions that I don't think are documented anywhere, at least that I could find.

1. When running the gateways in a cluster, does each gateway in the cluster need its own relay? (This is specific to bring your own relay) - Set the Azure Relay for on-premises data gateway | Microsoft Learn

2. Does each Gateway in the cluster need a seperate recovery key? Or can they all use the same recovery key?

If I can get the answer to these two questions I think it will fix my problem.  I think I am getting the connection error because they are sharing the same WCF relay? I'll mark your answer as accepted because I found some errors in the logs that pointed me toward this idea.

Thank you
