Odd Data Connection issue

I have a report that works beautifully on my desktop, queries are less than 1.2 seconds in performance.  I can see all my visuals returning across a direct query in the desktop.

When I publish, the information rendered in a table presents itself but all my visuals return an error stating: "Unable to connect to the data source 3550d887-f84c-42bc-b360-879518bafc03 . Either the data source is inaccessible, a connection timeout occurred, or the data source credentials are invalid. Please verify the data source configuration on the dataset settings page and contact a data source administrator to troubleshoot this issue."

I question the error because the data is returning in the data table I have.  All my gateways are showing connected but I don't know how else to trouble shoot this issue.

Hi @Jack_W_KY ,

Thank you for the update, and well done on identifying the issue with the shared Semantic Model  that’s a valuable insight.  Since shared Semantic Models can sometimes cause unexpected behavior, particularly with permissions or connections,

Here are a few tips that might be helpful.

  1. Check the Semantic Model settings in the Power BI Service, such as credentials, refresh settings, and gateway configuration.
  2. Use a copy of the Semantic Model if multiple reports depend on it. This helps prevent conflicts between reports.
  3. Test small changes (like adding one visual at a time) when reconnecting to the shared model. Use Performance Analyzer in Desktop to check for any delays or issues.
  4. Ensure permissions are consistent for anyone accessing the model and its data sources.

If this model is crucial for multiple reports, it might be worth creating a dedicated version just for this report to keep things clean and reliable.

I hope this helpful..

Hi @Jack_W_KY ,

Thank you for engaging with the Microsoft Fabric Community. Your visuals might require different permissions or queries than the table, and there may be a mismatch between your Power BI Desktop setup and the online environment (credentials, gateway, or network settings).

To resolve the issue, follow these steps.

  1. In Power BI online, go to Dataset Settings Data Source Credentials and make sure you’re signed in with the same account used in Power BI Desktop.
  2. Make sure your gateway is online, up to date, and properly set up with the correct server/database details and permissions for seamless connectivity.
  3. Create a new report with just one visual, publish it, and see if it loads properly in Power BI online.
  4. Open Performance Analyzer in Power BI Desktop to check if your visual queries are slow or blocked, then share insights with your admin.
  5. Ensure the gateway or Power BI online can actually connect to the data source (check for firewall blocks or access restrictions).

These steps should help pinpoint the issue and get your visuals working smoothly again.

If my response resolved your query, kindly mark it as the Accepted Solution to assist others. Additionally, I would be grateful for a 'Kudos' if you found my response helpful.

Thank you for confirming my trouble shooting steps.  I worked with our admin and confirmed proper gateway setup and all credentials.  Everything was set correctly and yet the problem persisted.

I've isolated the issue to a connection that is linked to a Semantic Model that existed on the service for another report.  Removing that shared connection allows the unrelated visuals to populate.

Creating a dedicated model was the only solution for my scenario.
