Nested Navigation in the Page View Pane on Service

Hi All: I'm looking to accomplish the below nested navigation for a complex report I'm building. How do I do this?

Hi @AverageJoes87

To create a nested navigation similar to what you see in the Power BI report screenshot, you can use the Power BI App Navigation and Bookmarks Pane. Here’s a step-by-step guide to achieve this:

1. Set Up Multiple Pages in Your Report

  • Start by creating multiple report pages that you want in your nested navigation structure. Each page can represent a different report or section of your report.

2. Create Bookmarks for Each Page/Section

  • Go to the View tab in Power BI Desktop and open the Bookmarks Pane.
  • For each report page, add a bookmark by selecting Add in the Bookmarks Pane.
  • Rename each bookmark to match the section name you want in the navigation.

3. Use Buttons for Navigation

  • Go to the Insert tab, select Buttons, and add a Blank button for each section of your report.
  • Position the buttons on the first page (or any main navigation page), and name them according to each section.
  • Set each button’s Action to Bookmark and select the corresponding bookmark.

4. Organize with a Navigation Pane Visual

  • If you want to simulate a sidebar-style navigation like the one in your screenshot, create a Shapes object (like a rectangle) to act as a sidebar.
  • Place all the buttons inside this shape on each report page to make it look consistent.
  • Ensure each button’s action is tied to the correct bookmark for seamless navigation.

5. Optional: Use Power BI Apps for Large Reports

  • Once your report is published to the Power BI Service, you can publish it as a Power BI App. Apps provide additional options for organizing and presenting content, especially for complex reports with many pages or nested sections.

6. Advanced: Use Power BI’s New Navigation Builder (in Power BI Service)

  • In the Power BI Service, the App Navigation Builder provides an easy way to add a nested structure. You can create folders within apps and add multiple reports or pages under each folder.
  • This approach requires that you publish your report to a Power BI App Workspace and then organize it via the App settings.

This setup will help you create a nested navigation structure similar to the one in the screenshot, making it easy for users to explore different sections of your report. Let me know if you need more specific details on any of these steps!
