Multiple data sources gateway

Hi,

I have a report with multiple data sources that I've published to PBI Service.

Data sources:

1. SQL Server database (on-prem)

2. Snowflake (cloud)

I have a gateway for the SQL Server db but I understand I shouldn't need one for Snowflake since it's in the cloud. However, when I select a gateway connection, I'm unable to apply my SQL server db gateway as it says I need to add a gateway for Snowflake even though I shouldnt need to?

This is the message I get when I publish a different report with a data source only from Snowflake
"You don't need a gateway for this dataset, because all of its data sources are in the cloud, but you can use a gateway for enhanced control over how you connect."

Please advise.

Based on that message I am wondering if your SQL really is on-prem or if it is Azure?  That message states that everything in the dataset is in the cloud.  You started out your thread mentioning that you have a single report with two datasources that make up a dataset.  Is that the case?  Or, is it two reports, one with each data source?

Hi @collinq, sorry I should've been clearer. That's the message I get from a different report which only has Snowflake as my data source. It was just to show that I didn't need a gateway for Snowflake.

But when I try to publish a report with two data sources (SQL and Snowflake), apparently a gateway is needed for Snowflake?

Hi @bo_afk ,

I ran across this article which states that the "new" connector (like last week new) does not need a connector.  Announcing enhanced connectivity for Snowflake | Microsoft Power BI Blog | Microsoft Power BI  that same article indicates that you do need a gateway with the older connection (which you appear to NOT need since you have a snowflake only report working fine).

As a rule of thumb, you only need a gateway for local resources.  I have done reports many times this way.  I am wondering if there is soemthing special about the Snowflake connector (and hence why they made a special announcement about it having new functionality.

Hi @collinq, thanks for the link!

It's weird that my gateway is supposedly 'Not configured correctly' because I don't have a gateway for Snowflake. It even shows that adding the gateway is optional.
