Moving SSRS reports from on-prem to Cloud

If I want to move SSRS reports to paginated repots running on the Cloud what exactly do I need? Here is what I know. I will need a workspce with a premium capacity. Will I need PBI Pro license? Anything else? I also want to use email subscriptions for my reports. No clients will be accessing reports. At least for now.

Thanks

Hi @Markzolotoy ,

According to the description on the official website:

Preparing for migration

As you prepare to migrate your reports to Power BI, first verify that your organization has a Power BI Premium subscription. This subscription is required to host and run your Power BI paginated reports.

Supported versions

You can migrate SSRS instances running on-premises, or on Virtual Machines hosted by cloud providers, like Azure.

The following list describes the SQL Server versions supported for migration to Power BI:

  • SQL Server 2012
  • SQL Server 2014
  • SQL Server 2016
  • SQL Server 2017
  • SQL Server 2019

Migration from Power BI Report Server is possible, too.

hi @Markzolotoy - As pointed out in the article shared by @v-luwang-msft you need to keep in mind the below objects in SSRS report (.rdl files) are not supported by the Microsoft provided migration tool

The following SSRS item types, however, can't be migrated to Power BI:

  • Shared data sources
  • Shared datasets
  • Resources, like image files
  • KPIs (SSRS 2016, or later—Enterprise Edition only)
  • Mobile reports (SSRS 2016, or later—Enterprise Edition only)
  • Report models (deprecated)
  • Report parts (deprecated)

We have implemented a POC using the migration tool and it works pretty well.

If you are migrating the reports manually then you would have to download each report from the Report server and then validate, configure and publish to the Premium workspace.

You are correct on the licensing - you would require a Premium license as the reports can only be hosted in a Premium workspace. If your organization has a Premium licence then anyone with permissions (within or outside the organization) can access the workspace.

Also distribution of reports via email subscriptions will work - this is also highlighted in the article shared by @v-luwang-msft

Hope this helps!

How do we get this tool? Microsoft provided migration tool?
