Hi Community, Good Morning/Good Evening,
Current Scenarion: I am axtracting data from Jira API & local Excel.
Question 1: Is it necessary to have a gateway installation to Power BI Report which is having Schedule refresh for every one hour on dialy basis.
Question 2: Is it enough to download the Gateway instally from Power BI service and Apply to my report. Or Do i need to install a separate Gateway ( External Gateway or Personal Gateway )

Hi. This is not an issue about Jira. If you connect just to Jira API, you shouldn't need a gateway at all. However, the local excels demand the onpremise data gateway. You could upload those excels to a Sharepoint. That way all your sources would be cloud and you could refresh without the gateway just configuring the credentials at Power Bi Service.
I hope that helps,
Happy to help!
Hi @KR300 ,
The method ibarrau provided should be helpful. For the first question, it is necessary to have a gateway installed if you want to schedule a refresh for your Power BI report that includes data from a local Excel file.
For the second question, if you are the only one using the data and reports, the personal mode might be sufficient. However, if having multiple users connecting to data sources or manage multiple data sources, the standard mode would be more appropriate.

Hi @ibarrau & @Anonymous , I have placed the Excel in my Organizational Share point location.
So, Data sources are
1. Jira API
2. Github API
3. Company Sharepoint - Excel - I would say all data is in Cloud
All data is coming from the Cloud. Still do i need a gateway for the refresh/Schedule Refresh for the report on hourly basis. ( i need to set up refresh10 times a day ).
If so, what is the best gatway to download -- Standard/Personal? because my team is also using/testing/validating/Manually the refreshing the report.
My team is testing/validationg the report like changing the Data source parameters ( Import Mode ) & refreshing the report manually so that we need to hand over the report to the client.
Do i need to enter Datasourece credentials in power bi service?
Actually my team is taking over the dataset while they do testing & manually refresh of the report ( they have all the access for the Jira/GitHub/Sharepoint/Concourse sites ).
Do they need to add their data source credetnials? because they testing/validating the report also.
So, here multiple people testing the report, validating the data & Changing the Data source parameters --Need Standard Gateway/Personal Gateway.
If all data is in Cloud - Do we need a gateway beacause while setting up schedule refresh the -- Refresh Option is Greyed Out and showing the Below error -
| Data source error: | Scheduled refresh is disabled because at least one data source is missing credentials. To start the refresh again, go to this dataset's settings page and enter credentials for all data sources. Then reactivate scheduled refresh |
Hi. It depends on how your power query code is. You can be using cloud sources and still need a data gateway. Let me explain it. When you work your requests with Web.Contents, you can keep your sources online without a gateway. However if you are scrapping a web with Web.Pages function, you must use a gateway. As far as I know, all your sources could work without it, but if you need special transformations for getting data it could be compromised. When using gateway you must to add sources and credentials at the gateway administration. When using cloud sources you must write the credentials at dataset/semanticmodel settings.
I hope that helps,
Happy to help!
@ibarrau @Anonymous
Note: My workspace is Premium Capacity
I am using web.contents function in the ( Json.Document(Web.Contents("https://jira.tools.xxxxxxxxxxxxx.us/rest/api/2/search?jql=project%20%3D%20SMAR%20AND%20issuetype%20in%20(bug%2C%20story%2C%20epic)%20and%20fixVersion%20%3D%20" & FixVersionName & "&maxResults=1000&fields=key,summary,fixVersions,priority,status,components,issuetype"))
and getting the data from API's
Note : All are cloud data
Questions:
1. Do i need a Gateway installation here? If yes, why beacuse i am using data from cloud, right?
2. If we don't need a gateway then why the Data soure credential option + Refresh Option are greyed out?
3. If i don't need a gateway, do i need to login or must be in online while refreshing the Semantic model in service?
4. If still I no need a gateway, I am not able to set up a schedule refresh even though my workspace is backed by Premium capacity.
Hi. Two things here. First try ro recreate you web.contents with good practices like relativepath or query like this: https://blog.crossjoin.co.uk/2016/08/16/using-the-relativepath-and-query-options-with-web-contents-i...
Second and most important, it sounds like the issue could be the sharepoint/onedrive. Please check this video out: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CYSMZxaXNLk
I Hope that helps,

@ibarrau @Anonymous ,
Actually I just tried with Only Sharepoint/One drive data source, i am able to refresh + set up the schedule refresh without a gateway here.
I think the problem is here Jira & Other API's
In my work: If i login to Jira i must coonect to a VPN then only able to login to jira and see/check my user stories & tasks ( Is it related to Public API's or Private API's or an VPN connection ? )
2. I just tested it ( I turned off/disconnected the VPN, then i refreshed the sematic model manually, failed. again turned on/connected the VPN - refreshed the sematic model manually , success.

Hi @ibarrau @Anonymous , now data Sources are:
Removed local excel file and placed in the Sharepoint folder
Jira API's ( Connected by Using username/passowrd in pbi desktop )
Other API's ( Connected by Using username/passowrd in pbi desktop )
Github Integration based on API using Token or may be Username/password
I am not able to set up a schedule refresh in the Power bi service
Data source credentials & Refresh Options are greyed out.
1. What is the reason here ( but i have all the data in the cloud right?. If need to login Jira like to see what are my user stories, tasks i have to use user name & password ).
2. After installation and implementation of Personal gateway then only the Data source credentials & Refresh Options are enabled.
3. Is it related to Public API or Private API connection things?
Actually If i login to Jira ( I need to connect to VPN ) - is this causing issue?
