Invalid Connection Credentials - One user but not another

I have a user who is a contributor in a workspace and trying to access a report built by someone else. This user has previously accessed the report as early as last week. Now, she cannot see the visual and gets the "Invalid Connection Credentials" error at the top. When I pull up that same report, it opens without issue.

Here is what we've tried so far:

1. We both have a pro license, but I am on a Fabric trial ; I can see data, she gets the error message. (she was on a Fabric trial but tried cancelling it and clearing cache and browser history to see if it helped, it did not).

2. She is using Firefox, I had her try another browser and it did not work.

3. I confirmed the gateway and connection are valid in the workspace, no issue there.

4. She has not changed her username or password recently.

5. She tried shutting everything down and restarting, no change.

6. The dataset was refreshed successfully on the 24th, but I have no issue accessing whereas she cannot see it.

7. Our workspaces are managed by Azure AD, I confirmed she is still a member of the correct group and that group is also assigned in the workspace correctly.

8. I also tried adding her explicitly to the workspace and report. No change

Anyone have any other ideas?

as its Azure SQL server connection then I am pretty sure its because of SSO enablement for direct query, Please reachout to the connection owner and request then to disable that, it will fix the issue

Hi @teetoes ,

This error may occur when the user’s credentials are not validated or updated by the Power BI service. There are a few possible causes and solutions for this issue:

  • The user may have saved incorrect credentials for the data source in Power BI online. To remove or update the credentials, go to Settings > Data source settings > Edit permissions > Clear permissions.
  • The user may have a different role or access level than you in the workspace or the data source. To check and change the user’s role or access level, go to Settings > Manage access > Add and manage access.
  • The user may have a firewall or proxy that blocks the connection to the data source. To resolve this, make sure the user’s network allows the required IPs and ports for Power BI.
  • The user may have an outdated version of Power BI Desktop or the gateway. To fix this, make sure the user has the latest version of Power BI Desktop and the gateway.

  • The user may have saved incorrect credentials for the data source in Power BI online. To remove or update the credentials, go to Settings > Data source settings > Edit permissions > Clear permissions.
    • The user's credentials have not change since she was able to successfully access the report on the 19th. And she does not own the model, I do not own the model. This issue is in the powerBI Service.
  • The user may have a different role or access level than you in the workspace or the data source. To check and change the user’s role or access level, go to Settings > Manage access > Add and manage access.
    • Yes, she is a contributor, I am an Admin. However, other Contributor levels on her team are able to access and view data in the report.
  • The user may have a firewall or proxy that blocks the connection to the data source. To resolve this, make sure the user’s network allows the required IPs and ports for Power BI.
    • We are on the same network which is behind a firewall. She has not changed her method of access so this does not make sense.
  • The user may have an outdated version of Power BI Desktop or the gateway. To fix this, make sure the user has the latest version of Power BI Desktop and the gateway.
    • Power BI desktop version should have no impact on if she can see a report in the Service. The report is published to the service and has been in place for about 5 months. She has not had issue accessing it until the 23rd of this month.

As I mentioned, this is in the Service and impacts another user. I don't feel providing a PBIX file is appropriate in this instance. And the desired outcome is for her to be able to open and view the report again.

UNCHECK "Use SSO via Azure AD for DirectQuery queries" in the data source with Basic Authentication setting
Or any data connection that your are using through gateway, this will resolve yur issue

The gateway is setup for OAUTH authentication. This has been in place for about 5 months without issue until now. Would that option also apply to OAUTH?

Can you help with the below
1. data source/s being used in report

2. Type of connection

Unfortunately, this isn't my model so I'm not sure if it's Direct or Import but it is a connection to Azure SQL Database.

as its Azure SQL server connection then I am pretty sure its because of SSO enablement for direct query, Please reachout to the connection owner and request then to disable that, it will fix the issue

Thank you for your help. This is indeed the issue. We are unchecking the box for now but adding her to the appropriate AD groups for access so once she is added then we will update it again so it gives permission via AD group.
