How to change the data source of all the reports with out any manual effort ?

Hi Community,

Greetings !!

My team and i have a big challenge to change the mostly used data source (SQL server) to a new server post upgrade in the environment. We have almost 100 reports which uses the same data source shown below in the screen shot and it has been added to the gateway as well for automating schedule refresh of the reports .

Could some one please assist on how to change the server name dynamically with out downloading the pbix file of each and every report and manually changing the server name to the new server post upgrade to the environment ?

Thanks,

G Venkatesh

Hi,

Could some one please assist me with the above question i have ? Is it even possible to change the server name dynamically on all existing reports instead of downloading each pbix file and adding them ?

Kindly respond as it is going to save us from hours of manual work .

Hi @Anonymous

If you have Premium or Premium per user license, you can try deployment pipelines.

Currently, power bi service doesn't support to change data source directly.

When you publish a report from desktop to service, it will generate a dataset.

The dataset contains metadata and credentials. Then add correct credentials in gateway will make it works successfully.

So you need to change the credentials in power bi desktop (there will be a new credentials in your dataset)and then configure gateway to connect to your new server.

Hi @Anonymous ,

I don't think that there is a way to do that. But this sound like a great oppurtunity for parameters to change datasources in the service... but this must be done before you upload a report...I know that dosn't help now but may be in the future?
