How does app dataset work when workspace report/dataset is modified without updating the app?

I have a report & it's dataset in a workspace, and it is published to an app. I then modify the report/dataset and re-publish to the workspace. I have not updated the app at this point. What happens? Are separate copies maintained? Does the report data in the app still refresh? How long can it stay this way?

Hi @smileamile2 ,

According to my test, when the report/dataset is modified without updating the app:

1. If you just add or delete visuals in the report without changing the dataset, then your app will not have any changes. For example, I added a table visual to the report, but there is no change in my app.

2. If your dataset changes (such as replacing values, etc.), when you republish the report, the dataset in the original app will also be updated. For example, I replace the data "CA3605" with "Replace" and publish it again to Service, the data in the app is also updated.

In summary, without republishing the app, it will only reflect the changes in the dataset. This is also mentioned in the documentation.

If the problem is still not resolved, please provide detailed error information or the expected result you expect. Let me know immediately, looking forward to your reply.

Depends on what you changed in the report and/or the data model.  Since the meta data is now likely out of whack between the workspace and the published app it is very likely that your app users will see error messages about missing columns or failed renders.  Your next dataset refresh may fail as well.

Ok so dataset is no good. But if it's just report-level changes, would two separate copies be kept indefinitely until the app was updated?

It's not really a question of report or dataset. The question is "Did the meta data change?" . That can be another column added to the table (or worse, one being removed), but it can also be you rearranging the position of a visual.

You are good if there is no meta data change. You're not if there is.
