Header Icons always visible (not only hover) within Graph and not on top of due to no real estate

Good day,

I am busy developing a custom scorecard with multiple KPI's and very limited real estate.

I have only 2 levels (Quarter and Month); however, my users don't know about expanding down a level or drilling up, My initial thinking was creating 2 buttons, but the issue is that there are other KPI cards that will also have buttons of "QTR" and "MTH," so the dynamics of the bookmarks I can't control only the 2 visuals as it will reset another KPI card's visuals and bookmarks reset the existing state of other visuals

I only have 2 header icons enabled, only the expand to next level and drill up

What I really would like is the header icons to always be visible (not only hover) within the graph and not on top of it due to no real estate. Any suggestions or workarounds, please?

Hi @icassiem ,  I think , there isn't a native way to make header icons always visible or place them inside the visual itself. You could try workarounds of which some i am mentioning

  • Use Overlay Buttons:

    • Create two custom buttons for "Expand" and "Drill Up."
    • Position them strategically near your graph to avoid consuming the graph's real estate.
    • Set the buttons to trigger the respective actions using bookmarks or action assignments.
  • Custom Visual with Buttons:

    • Use a custom visual like Deneb or Charticulator to design a scorecard that integrates icons or buttons directly into the visualization.
    • You can control the placement of interactive elements within the visual.
  • Tooltips for Instruction:

    • Add a tooltip to your KPI visual with instructions on how to drill up or expand levels.
    • This won't make the icons always visible but will guide users effectively.
  • Duplicate Visuals for Levels:

    • Instead of drill-through or expand, create two separate visuals for Quarter and Month views and toggle between them using bookmarks or slicers.
If this post helped please do give a kudos and accept this as a solution
      Thanks In Advance

Thank You @Akash_Varuna

I have roughly 12 KPI and duplicating the visuals will cluster the screen even more and no real estate per card for 2 visuals of that width

Option 1,  the issue is that there are other KPIs that also have levels for buttons. When the dynamic is complex of multiple views across the scorecard KPI, the bookmarks will override or reset what was filtered or expanded on other visuals as the bookmark saved showing other visuals

is there at least a way to force the buttons to pop up in the visual?

Hi @icassiem I dont think Power BI supports other than the hover  method for drillthrough
You could Add static icons/shapes near visuals to indicate drill/expand functionality.

Or decrease the size of the header other than this the ones i mentioned above

Thank You @Akash_Varuna
