Hello, There are a lot of posts with similar issues, but after reviewing them for some time, none of the solutions seem to apply directly to my situation - or I need more information than the original requestor did to execute the solution.
I have been using Power BI for just under a year and learning as I go. Someone on our infrastruture team set up an on prem Gateway for me to use and I now have several reports automatically refreshing using that gateway.
I suspect there is a step that I need to take every time I publish a new report so that it will refresh automatically.
Specifically, my problem is that my new report says "gateway not configured".
Data source error: | Scheduled refresh is disabled because at least one data source is missing credentials. To start the refresh again, go to this dataset's settings page and enter credentials for all data sources. Then reactivate scheduled refresh. |
However, this same datasource is used for many other reports which are refreshing dailyvia the same gateway without issue.
Here are the settings for a report that is refreshing successfully every day:
Yet this one, using the exact same data source and gateway, says it is not configured correctly.
Since I'm not an expert here, I didn't click "add to gateway" becasue it seems this datasource is already added to the gateway as I have other reports refreshing successfully.
The datasource name is correct.
I saw that some other solutions suggested adding a user. Not only can I not find the place to do that as shown in the screenshots for those solutions, but aren't my credentials already added to that gateway since it is used to successfully refresh other reports?
I also saw suggestions about updating PBI desktop version or ODBC driver on the server. I have the same reluctance to accept these solutions because there is obviously no problem with my desktop version, gateway, data source, or my permissions to that data source.
I am hoping this is a simple step I am missing that, once identified, I can incorporate into my documented steps for publishing a new report to the PBI Service.
Thank you.
Sarah
Solved! Go to Solution.
It is really hard to tell from the screenshots the server and database name, but they must match exactly with that used in your published report. For the one that works, it looks like the server name is much longer than the one that doesn't work.
Some how it exists in your source file. You'll need to open up your pbix file and either remove or update the queries that are using the incorrect source.
In the ribbon, select "Transform data". In the query editor ribbon, select "View", then "Query Dependencies" to find the culprits.
The above comment from @blopez11 did the trick along with this information
The data source settings in Power BI desktop need to match those set up in the Gateway
Here is how to view the data source in the Power BI Report
Thank you. That was helpful. I can now SEE The problem. The data source server name included in the semantic model for the new report does not end with our domain. I now see that there is another connection just below that which does end in our domain. I can also select the gateway. (see below)
But I can't seem to remove the one that is causing the error or APPLY my changes.
How can I get rid of the source with the incomplete server name and apply the one with the correct server name?
It would also be helpful to know how the incomplete server name got there to begin with. I didn't set this up manually. I don't want to get stuck here every time I publish a new report.
Thanks,
Sarah

blopez11 - This is magic. I found it immediately once you told me where to look. Thank you for your time and for keeping it simple! 🙂
Hi @SarahHope ,
I might understand what you mean. For a gateway, it is a bridge, meaning that your reports and data sources need to be connected, and just because your reports are sourced from the same data sources doesn't mean you don't need to create connections for them. For your current situation, multiple reports can share a connection.
Hope it helps!

This makes sense, but I don't know how to create a connection from my new report to my existing data source.
Please open manage connections and gateways page, this link should directly take you there: https://app.powerbi.com/groups/me/gateways?experience=power-bi
Look for the connection which was created by your infra team. If you open the connection you will find the server hostname and database name entered by them while configuring the connection. Please match them with the datasource that you used in your new report. If those are not same then you need to ask your infra team to configure a new connection for you.
If you could not find the connection then that means you do not have access to the connection and you need to ask your infra team to add you as a user into that connection.

The data source server and dbname match for many reports, including the new one. Does this mean that every time I publish a new report, I need to contact the Infra team to create a connection to my existing datasource?
