Gateway needed for on premise data when only refreshing in PBI desktop?

Hi,

Due to circumstances, we are not able to install a PBI Gateway right now. One big (1gb) on premise dataset therefore is refreshed manually in PBI desktop. Not a problem, since this only needs to be done once a week.

But are there issues when using the published report in the PBI service, without the Gateway? Or can users just use this dataset the same way as if a Gateway is installed?

Once published to the Power BI service, the report can still be viewed and interacted with.  However, you will not be able to refresh the data in the dataset from the service.  You will have to do as you mention, refresh in desktop, then republish.
