We have been testing the GIT Workspace integration and .PBIP Project solutions in our org. After setting up the initial sync between the Workspace and GIT we've been testing various update/deployment options. When we were updating Datasets/Reports in the browser and committing changes everything is fine; the same holds true from VS Code.
We ran into the following scenario:
Since this workspace acts as a template; we wanted to test a scenario where changes were made to the Report (Report 2) that were not part of the source control. Could it pick up changes, etc.
I opened the original .pbix for Report 2 and tried to publish directly to the workspace. I was able to publish but then received an error about duplicate name when trying to committ. I was able to Undo the changes.
I opened VS Code and saved the original .PBIP file to the working directory for GIT. I was able to commit the changes to GIT from VS Code. However, when I went into service to grab the updates I received the same error message about duplicate names.
This is not necessarily best practice; but I'm also trying to mimic what some users may end up doing. If this is desired behavior; thats fine and we work around it. If this is not expected behavior then I'm glad I brought it up.
Thanks,
Jeremy Winchell
@GilbertQ - That could very well be the case. Since it does modify the definition I could see where the connection is broken.
With the number of customers we have running our BI solution (along with client customizations) we are looking for ways to push out mass updates leveraging Git so we can merge the core product with client updates. Trying to remove more steps from the process.
Appreciate the response and all you do for the community.
Jeremy
HI @jwinchell40
I think this is not how it is intended to work and that is why you are getting the errors when trying to make later changes.
