Exceeded the refresh request limit for this semantic model within the last 24 hours

Good morning

I built an app a while ago that the business have been using for well over a year / possibly two years and yesterday I started getting emails about refresh issues. I click on the Learn More button in the email and there's a page called Troubleshoot refresh scenarios but I can't find anything with the above message.  The page is a bit overwhelming to be honest.  Here are some more details from the generated email:

Failure details: The last refresh attempt failed because of an internal service error. This is usually a transient issue. If you try again later and still see this message, contact support.

Today is Wednesday 08:36 and I started getting these messages Tuesday 00:26 - the message says this is usually a transient issue.  No users have started screaming yet so I do I set tight and wait for it to resolve itself?  What can I do, can I have some guidance please?  Thanks

You're encountering the error: "Exceeded the refresh request limit for this semantic model within the last 24 hours". This typically occurs when the number of refreshes for a dataset exceeds the allowed limit within a 24-hour period.

🔍 Understanding the Issue

In Power BI:

  • **Pro (Shared Capacity)**: Limited to 8 refreshes per dataset per 24 hours.
  • **Premium/PPU (Premium Per User)**: Allows up to 48 refreshes per dataset per 24 hours.

Manual refreshes initiated via the Power BI Service or API count towards this limit. If multiple refresh attempts are made in quick succession, especially after failures, it's possible to hit this limit unintentionally. :contentReference[oaicite:0]{index=0}

🛠️ Recommended Actions

  1. Wait for 24 Hours: Since the limit is based on a rolling 24-hour window, waiting will reset the count. Monitor the refresh history to determine when the next refresh can occur.
  2. Review Refresh History: In the Power BI Service, navigate to your dataset's settings and check the refresh history to identify how many times it has been refreshed in the past 24 hours.
  3. Optimize Refresh Schedules: If using scheduled refreshes, ensure they are spaced out to avoid hitting the limit. Consider reducing the frequency if possible.
  4. Implement Incremental Refresh: For large datasets, using incremental refresh can reduce the load and frequency of full dataset refreshes.
  5. Upgrade to Premium: If frequent refreshes are essential, consider upgrading to Power BI Premium or PPU to increase the refresh limits.

📚 Additional Resources

Feel free to provide more details about your dataset's size, refresh schedule, and whether you're using Pro or Premium capacity. This information can help in offering more tailored advice.
