Hi All,
I recently upgraded to on-prem version of PBI RS May 2025 from Jan 2025 and I am getting the following error in my few visuals:
Error fetching data for this visual
An unexpected error occurred (file '', line , function '').
Please try again later or contact support. If you contact support, please provide these details.
However, when I try to open same report locally using "Edit in Power BI Desktop" option, all visuals seem okay.
Hi @DarshG
I wanted to follow up to see if the suggestions shared earlier by @collinq helped address the error you’re seeing after upgrading to the May 2025 on-prem version of Power BI Report Server.
As mentioned, this issue can sometimes occur if there are version mismatches between the Power BI Desktop (optimized for Report Server) and the Report Server itself. Make sure you’re using the matching May 2025 version of Power BI Desktop (RS) when editing or republishing your reports. Additionally, verify that all data sources and custom visuals are compatible with the new Report Server release.
If these steps resolved the issue, it would be great if you could mark the response as accepted it could help others facing the same challenge.
looking for your response !!

Hi @DarshG
Just checking in to see if @collinq suggestions helped resolve the error you were experiencing after upgrading to the May 2025 version of Power BI Report Server.
One common cause of this issue is a mismatch between the version of Power BI Desktop (optimized for Report Server) and the Report Server itself. Please make sure you're using the May 2025 version of Power BI Desktop (RS) to edit or publish your reports. Also, double-check that your data sources and any custom visuals are compatible with the new release.
If those steps fixed the issue, it would be awesome if you could mark the response as accepted—it might help others who run into the same problem.
Looking forward to hearing back from you!

Hi @DarshG ,
You updated one piece of the puzzle. You should first try to update your Power BI Desktop and your Gateway server as well to the latest versions. Then try again and let us know.

Private message me for consulting or training needs.
I can see all "Table" and "Card" visuals not working and throwing the error.
