Embedded F SKU

Hello,

We currently have an A1 SKU with a report embedded into our web application in an app owns data scenario for our customers. We use a service principal for authentication. Our users login to our application and the correct data is shown on the report using RLS based on the token we send. Along the lines of role = embedded_customer, Username = 'customerid1'.

Can this be done on any F series SKU? My understanding is that you only require an F64 or above to prevent having to licence individual users with pro licences who have an identiy customer@customer.com to be used to login to the fabric portal / use the mobile application etc. As there are no identities, but only RLS rules for our application then I'm assuming F64 is not required as there in effect no users.

Sorry if this has been asked before, the documentation seems a bit vague.

Thanks,

David

Yes, you are correct in your understanding. In an embedded scenario where your application owns the data and users access the data through your application, there is typically no requirement for individual user licensing (such as Power BI Pro licenses) since users are not accessing Power BI directly but rather through your application.

The F-series SKUs (such as F1, F2, F4, etc.) are designed for embedded analytics scenarios like yours, where you embed Power BI reports into your application and users access the reports within your application without needing individual Power BI licenses. These SKUs are suitable for scenarios where the number of users is high and licensing each user individually would not be feasible.

As long as your application is managing access to the reports and enforcing security measures like Row-Level Security (RLS) based on the user's identity or context, you should be able to use the F-series SKUs effectively without needing to license individual users with Power BI Pro licenses.

It's important to review the licensing terms and documentation provided by Microsoft to ensure compliance with the licensing requirements for your specific scenario. However, based on the information you've provided, the F-series SKUs seem to be a suitable choice for your embedded analytics scenario.

@dp410 you may have come across this mapping documentation from Microsoft - https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/fabric/enterprise/licenses - A1 is mapped to F8 there.

Note that the pricing is comparable only if you buy the F8 Reservation. As you probably know A1 is essentially PAYG in that you can turn it off or on using a LogicApp (or manually in Azure). The F8 PAYG is about 65% more expensive.
