Can a Power BI date slicer be configured to automatically default to the latest six months without manually republishing the report each month?
Solved! Go to Solution.
Hi @Farmaan_1,
AFAIK, you can't have between slicer with relative date functionality. The max you can do is fix a start date which is usually an option for YTD/QTD/MTD defaults. But again, even in that case you need to update the slicer manually every year/quarter/month to fix the start date.
One work-around I can think of is having 2 buttons in the screen: One for relative date and one for custom date (between slicer). Default with last 6 month relative date so that data is only for last 6 months when user opens the dashboard. If the user want to select specific range, they can click on button saying custom date wherein between slicer appears and relative slicer disappears.
In short, 2 buttons:
Button 1: Relative Date -> Relative date slicer
Button 2: Custom Date -> Between date slicer
Your requirement is a limitation in Power BI and I would suggest convincing the client for either relative slicer or above alternative where only an additional click is required.

Hello @Farmaan_1
Yes you can configure a Power BI date slicer to automatically default to the latest six months. Here’s the easiest way to set it up:
1. Add a Date Slicer
Insert a slicer visual and drag your date field into it.
2. Switch to Relative Mode
Click the dropdown arrow on the slicer and change the type to Relative.
3. Set the Range
Choose Months as the unit, and set it to Last 6 months.
4. Save and Publish
Once applied, the slicer will always show the most recent six months dynamically, without needing to republish or manually adjust it each month.
Bonus tip: You can also apply a Relative Date Filter in the filter pane if you prefer to control visuals without using a slicer.
This approach is simple, reliable, and works well for most reporting scenarios. Hope this helps!

Hii @Farmaan_1
You can make the slicer automatically default to the latest 6 months without republishing.
Use a Relative Date Slicer instead of a normal date slicer.
Set it to:
Last >> 6 >> Months
And turn on Include today
A relative date slicer always updates itself based on the current date, so every time the dataset refreshes, the report automatically shows the latest 6 months.
But client wants in this format
They dont want in relative format they want in between.
You can do this with a between slicer setting by doing a couple things:
- Adding a relative date filter at the visual level for date and set to last six months
- for the PBIX file remove the check this option to disable persistent filtering so the slicer reloads to default each time:
Hii @Farmaan_1
If the client wants the Between format but still needs the last 6 months by default, the only workaround is:
Create a bookmark where the Between slicer is set to “Last 6 months”.
Turn on View >> Bookmarks >> Update.
In Power BI Service, enable “Reset to default” so users always start with that bookmark.
Each refresh will still show the correct latest 6 months because the data updates, even though the slicer visually stays in the Between format.
This is the only supported method because Between slicers cannot dynamically shift on their own.
Even if we set the slicer in the bookmark in the last six months, it wont get updated dynamically as we will have to republish the report every month by updating the date in the Book mark
