Direct query to another power BI dataset: works on my computer, doesn't work on app.powerbi

Hello,

I have a report that uses both:

  • A direct query to another power BI data set
  • A local file on my computer. I'm not expecting the report to refresh from my computer, so I don't use a gateway.

The report works fine on my computer user power BI desktop. But when I publish, every visual based on the other data set have an error:

Couldn't load the data for this visual

Couldn't retrieve the data for this visual. Please try again later.

Please try again later or contact support. If you contact support, please provide these details.

==> How to investigate this type of issues?

Thank you

1 ACCEPTED SOLUTION

Hi,

I did some testing in this regards, I found that it's only the local data from the report that generate the failures on the data from the direct query.

The set up:

  1. I have 2 reports, lets call them "Report A" & "Report B"
  2. Report B call data from "report A"
  3. Both reports load data from my local hard drive (yes, not the best solution, but it's faster than sharepoint during the dev phase)
  4. My issue is on report B, I have errors on visuals

Finding when using report B online :

  • Visuals on report B that use the local data work well, visual that uses data from Report A fails
  • If I move all data on the sharepoint on report A, report B fails in the same way
  • If I move data on the sharpoint only on report B, all visuals are working

Conclusion: it's the local data on report B that generate the failure to load data on visuals using data from report A.

Hi @Ncio ,

After testing, I find that if you use dataset and local files as the datasource, then the gateway is necessary to configure the local datasource.

Refer to the steps shown in the figure below, configure the gateway for the local file, and edit credentials of the dataset source in the Data source credentials.

If you don't use gateway, try to upload files to SharePoint, then refer to How to create DirectQuery (Composite) using an existing Power BI Dataset and a local Excel file

If the problem is still not resolved, please provide detailed error information or the expected result you expect. Let me know immediately, looking forward to your reply.

Best Regards,
Winniz

remove the local file data source and test again.  I don't think your "I'm not expecting the report to refresh from my computer, so I don't use a gateway."  approach is viable.
